How To Cope When Kids Get Gum Disease

If your child’s gums are sore and swollen, these may be signs of gum disease in some form. These periodontal diseases are bacterial infections that destroy the gums, tissues, roots and bones around the teeth. While they are commonly seen in adults, kids can also develop gum disease so you need to know how to handle them.

Different Types of Trouble

There are various stages of gum disease, from slight to severe. Dentists divide them into these three categories:

  1. Gingivitis: As the mildest form of periodontal disease, the gums are starting to become swollen and tend to bleed easily when during brushing and flossing.
  2. Mild periodontitis: If gingivitis isleftuntreated, it can worsen into this stage. The signs of this gum disease include severely swollen gums, pockets around the gum line, loosening of teeth, and erosion of the bone surrounding teeth.
  3. Moderate to advanced periodontitis: This is the most advanced stage because it is a substantial loss of both bone and tissue around the teeth.

Specific Signs of Gum Disease

Just as each child is unique, the symptoms that each experiences are different. But these are the most common signs of a dangerous periodontal disease:

  • Red, tender gums
  • Bleeding during daily brushing and flossing
  • Receding gums
  • Bad breath or taste in the mouth
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • A shift in bite and jaw alignment

Sources of Soreness

You can usually blame bacteria and plaque for gingivitis. As this dental decay builds up, it leads to more severe types of periodontal disease. While decay is the leading cause, there are other possible reasons for gum disease in children, such as:

  • Personal genetics
  • Improper oral hygiene
  • A diet lacking essential nutrients or a vitamin C deficiency
  • Medical conditions like diabetes, as well as autoimmune or systemic diseases
  • Hormonal changes in the body
  • Bruxism, which is the ongoing clenching and grinding of teeth
  • Some medications

Treatment for Tiny Teeth

Your child’s dentist in Woodbridge will determine the best course of care for your child based on their age and medical history, along with the extent of periodontal disease and your child’s tolerance levels. Treatment typically includes plaque removal procedures, medication, or surgery for advanced cases.
